The American Moving & Storage Association has chosen Hilldrup Moving & Storage of Stafford, Va., to receive the 2009 Moving and Storage Agent of the Year Service Excellence Award.

The award is presented to agents nominated by their affiliated van line based on customer surveys and van line experience. Nominations are judged primarily on customer service assessments and industry awards and recognitions. Consideration is also given to such factors as leadership, innovation, community involvement and activities that enhance the industry image. Hilldrup was nominated by United Van Lines, Inc.

The company was founded in 1903 by R.G. Hilldrup as a horse and carriage transportation company hauling baggage from trains and steamships for students attending a local college. By the 1930s, Hilldrup had expanded its services to include moving and storage, bus and taxi rides, rigging and freight. In 1940, C.B. McDaniel, an employee, bought the business from Hilldrup. In the 1950s, McDaniel sold all divisions of Hilldrup except moving and storage.

In the 1960s, Hilldrup partnered with United Van Lines, enabling Hilldrup to significantly expand its service area. A decade later, C.B. McDaniel turned control of the company over to his son, Charles G. McDaniel. In the 1990s, Hilldrup expanded its international and commercial services by creating two separate divisions.

Each year AMSA recognizes some of the best performing and highest achieving individuals and companies in the industry.
