The Kansas Turnpike is opening its first interchange in nearly 15 years today.

The Tonganoxie interchange, Exit 212 on Interstate 70, will be the first of in the state to be completely automated. It will feature self-pay machines that will read a driver's turnpike ticket, inform the driver how much he owes, and then collect payment via coins, bills or a payment card. Or, drivers can use their K-Tag transponder.

A dozen more interchanges are scheduled to get some automated machines in 2010.
