Con-way Inc. has been honored for the second consecutive year by Supply & Demand Chain Executive with its Green Supply Chain Award for 2009.

The award winners were featured in the October/November issue of Supply & Demand Chain Executive.

"Con-way set ambitious goals around sustainability and initiated a broad range of programs targeted at producing not just savings, but also green supply chain benefits for both Con-way and its customers," said Andrew K. Reese, editor of Supply & Demand Chain Executive. "Con-way's efforts demonstrate that sustainability can extend into every facet of a company's business, and we are pleased to recognize their efforts in this year's Green Supply Chain Awards."

Supply & Demand Chain Executive's Green Supply Chain Awards recognize small, midsize and large companies that are taking steps to implement green practices. The publication judged submissions based on the clarity and content of the goals and strategy, the extent to which these strategies were implemented, the impact of measurable results to date and projected results.

"Con-way has aligned its sustainability goals to support the three P's -- People, Planet and Profit -- concentrating on four major areas:
* Energy conservation
* Waste reduction
* Recycling
* Procurement

The company's green supply chain goals include establishing a framework for a sustainability evaluation for every functional process in the shared-services organization, reducing fuel consumption at Con-way Freight and Con-way Truckload, implementing recycling and waste reduction practices, reducing energy usage and utilizing green suppliers whenever possible. Additionally, Con-way Freight, Con-way Truckload and Menlo Worldwide Logistics are all U.S. Environmental Protection Agency SmartWay Transport Partners, and Menlo Worldwide Logistics recently received its first SmartWay Environmental Excellence Award.
