Virginia has opened a new PrePass weigh station on Interstate 64, east of Richmond, rounding out the total number of stations in the state to 16.

"We are delighted with the expansion of PrePass weigh station technology in Virginia," said Richard Landis, president and CEO of HELP Inc., the public-private partnership that offers PrePass. "Recent attention on truck safety has reinforced the need for everyone to do more."

PrePass technology allows qualified carriers to comply electronically with state-established weight, safety and credential requirements and bypass these facilities at highway speed.

In addition, PrePass can reduce the environmental effects of emissions by eliminating weigh station stops and idling in queues. In Virginia, PrePass has processed more than 20 million weigh station events, reducing fuel consumption by 8 million gallons and emissions by 18 thousand metric tons, PrePass says.

"By using PrePass, Virginia truck inspectors are able to focus on those trucks most likely to be deficient in their compliance with credential, weight and safety regulations," Landis said.
