The number of jobs lost in the trucking industry increased to 3,600 in the month of September, compared with 3,300 jobs lost in August
, according to a report released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics Friday. In September, a total of 1,257,700 people were employed in the trucking industry.
The news comes on the heels of the nationwide unemployment rate increasing to 9.8 percent during the month, with 263,000 jobs lost overall.
"I have met many workers who lost their jobs through no fault of their own who have told me that they just want to get back to work and be productive," said Hilda Solis, U.S. secretary of labor. "I've seen this spirit all across the country. At the Department of Labor, we are working tirelessly to ensure that we fulfill our responsibility to provide these workers with the assistance they need today."
Since September of 2008, the trucking industry has seen 120,400 jobs lost. In September of last year, the industry employed 1,378,100 individuals.
"We still have a ways to go before we can be sure that all Americans have access to good jobs, but I am confident that we will reach that goal," Solis said.
