Alabama state troopers have distributed 12,288 tickets so far as part of its Ticketing Aggressive Cars and Trucks Campaign, 95 percent of which went to drivers of passenger vehicles
, according to the Birmingham News.

In September, the Alabama Department of Public Safety received a $645,000 grant from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to crack down on unsafe driving behaviors that contribute to serious fatal crashes between personal and commercial vehicles. These behaviors include unsafe lane changes, following too closely, failure to signal lane changes, failure to yield the right of way, speeding, and aggressive driving, which is a combination of two or more risky driving behaviors.

The funding has gone toward a seven-week blitz, which was held for one week in September and two weeks in October, the publication reports. Of the 12,288 violations, 11,339 were given to four-wheel, passenger vehicles for potentially crash-crashing offenses, the publication says.

According to the Birmingham News, crashes involving 18-wheelers are not the fault of the commercial truck driver in 75 percent of the incidents in the state, Col. Chris Murphy, Alabama Department of Public Safety director, said last month.
