Through a new agreement, Remy International and Phoenix International will produce a standardized platform of high performance motors and controls for hybrid and electric vehicles
. The new initiative is part of a $60.2 million manufacturing grant the two received by the U.S. Department of Energy.
The new method is meant to cut back on engineering costs and development time associated with the current approach of custom designs. The project will focus on high efficiency and high durability systems necessary for truck, bus, military, and various off‐road equipment manufacturers. The companies will offer the matched motors and controllers independently or as an integrated system.
"We are confident our companies' combined strengths and expertise can create the cost‐effective environment necessary to draw many more vehicle manufacturers to the hybrid marketplace," said Chuck Kaufman, president of Phoenix International.
The funds will go toward creating or protecting nearly 1,000 jobs in the U.S. for Remy, its partners, and its supply base. In addition, a strong domestic manufacturing base for electric drive motor technology will be established. Remy hopes the effort will accelerate the use of electric drive vehicles with higher fuel efficiency.
The first matched motor and controller is scheduled for October 2009, based on Remy's high voltage hairpin "HVH" technology.
