Peterbilt announced it will permanently close its Madison, Tenn., truck assembly plant in an effort to realign its North American manufacturing operations
. The plant will shutter Dec. 1.

According to the company, the Madison plant has not built trucks since July 2008. The company will continue production at other facilities.

"This was a difficult, but necessary decision," said Bill Jackson, Peterbilt general manager. "The current and projected market conditions are very challenging and Peterbilt is aligning its production capacity with market demand. Peterbilt is proud to have been a member of the greater Nashville community for 40 years and we thank our employees for their excellent contribution."

The closure will result in about 390 layoffs, according to The Tennessean, which quoted Larry Vessels, plant manager.

Peterbilt, based in Denton, Texas, has dealers in over 247 North American locations.
