The American Trucking Associations has voiced its support of the Department of Transportation's campaign to prevent drunk driving in the final weeks of summer
, especially with the upcoming Labor Day holiday weekend.

According to the ATA, during the holiday weekend last year, 40 percent of all fatal crashes involved a drunk driver. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration found that only one quarter of 1 percent of commercial vehicle drivers tested positive for alcohol concentration equal to or more than 0.04, which is half of the passenger vehicle limit, according to the agency's drug and alcohol survey.

This year's DOT campaign has enlisted 11,000 police departments and other law enforcement agencies across the nation to crack down even more on drunk drivers.

"We're thankful for the Department of Transportation's leadership on this very serious issue," said Bill Graves, ATA president and CEO. "Drunk driving is a preventable problem that compromises the safety of all motorists sharing the road."

The annual campaign, with the slogan "Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest," got underway Friday.
