The West Virginia Parkways Economic Development and Tourism Authority has increased tolls on the West Virginia Turnpike, the first toll hike in 28 years.
Rates for all classes of commercial vehicles and passenger vehicles were boosted.
For example, a five-axle tractor-trailer now has to pay $6.75, versus $4.25 before. However, those with an E-ZPass commercial account will be charged $5.40, while those with a non-state E-ZPass will pay $5.87.
Those who are members of the turnpike's commuter discount plan will experience no fee hikes. The agency also approved a new discount program for those less frequent travelers, in which drivers can sign up for a West Virginia E-ZPass for $5 a year, pay a $10 refundable deposit for a transponder, and pre-pay funds via credit card. Rates for these customers will increase from $1.25 to $1.30, and will be automatically deducted from their pre-paid account.

The agency needs funds to cover the costs to repair, rehabilitate and reconstruct the road's aging bridges, roadways and facilities, in addition to deferred maintenance. The organization expects to spend $335 million in essential deferred maintenance and capital costs, including $242 million for paving.
