Fleet managers and drivers can hear straight from their peers about how selective catalytic reduction (SCR) works in the real world as Volvo and Mack customers talk about their experiences in online videos.

Several Mack customers relate their fleets' operational experience with SCR. For instance, Dan Alderfer, fleet superintendent of the H&K Group (Haines & Kibblehouse), a large vocational fleet in the Northeast U.S., says his SCR-equipped MACK Granite has "very good" performance while delivering significantly better fuel economy. And the diesel exhaust fluid used by the SCR system is a non-issue, he says, since it only needs replenishing once a week.

Mike Burns, vice president of regional truckload carrier Burns Motor Freight, also reports good results with his SCR-equipped MACK Pinnacle. The fuel economy is very good, the fleet found it could handle DEF with no more concern than antifreeze or windshield washer fluid, and the truck handled winter extremes of cold in the mountains and northern states without any problems.

In the Volvo video, a long-haul truck driver and a fleet executive both discuss the ease of use, improved fuel economy, great performance and other operational aspects of SCR in down-to-earth terms.

Mike Halpin, a team driver for Watkins Shepard Trucking, covers about 7,200 miles a week coast-to-coast and North to South, and says his experience with SCR has been trouble-free. Bill Parry, vice president of logistics for regional grocery chain Giant Eagle, details how his five SCR-equipped Volvo tractors have gotten the job done on a daily basis with no drama since they were delivered in October 2007.

Both emphasized how obtaining, handling and using diesel exhaust fluid has been a non-issue in their operations; Parry says it is similar to handling windshield washer fluid.
