The final phase of the changes to I-80/94 (the Frank Borman Expressway) on the Indiana/Illinois border is now under way, meaning lanes and various ramps are restricted through November 2009 during road reconstruction.
This work is in relation to the $97 million Major Moves New Construction project that will widen the Borman from the current six lanes to 10 lanes between State Road 53 (Broadway) and Central Avenue in Lake County.
The project is scheduled for completion in summer 2011. Construction will focus on the eastbound lanes this year and the westbound lanes in 2010. In 2011, the Borman is scheduled to be open in its final configuration of four through lanes in each direction plus continuous ramp lanes.
To allow for eastbound lane reconstruction, all lanes of Borman traffic are being shifted north and some ramps closed. The expressway will remain three lanes of through traffic in both directions. The temporary lane configuration and ramp closures will remain in place through November 2009 while crews work day and night shifts.
The week of March 9, the eastbound lanes will shift north into a special configuration and the following ramps will close: I-80/94 east to I-65 north, I-65 south to I-80/94 east and I-80/94 east to Central Avenue. The work schedule is subject to change in the event of inclement weather.
Special Eastbound Lane Configuration:
• Express Lane--EB left lane for passenger cars only (no trucks) separated by a barrier wall
• Two middle lanes for through traffic
• Ramp lane--far right lane for SB I-65 only
Ramp Closures:
Broadway (S.R. 53)
• Ramp from NB or SB Broadway to EB I-80/94
• Detour: WB I-80/94 to clover leaf ramps at Grant Street back to EB I-80/94 I-65
• Ramp from EB I-80/94 to NB I-65
• Detour: Continue on EB I-80/94 to NB S.R. 51 to WB U.S. 20 to I-65
• Ramp from SB I-65 to EB I-80/94
• Detour: NB I-65 to EB U.S. 12/20 to EB U.S. 20 to SB S.R. 51 to EB I-80/94
Central Avenue
• Ramp from EB I-80/94 to Central Avenue
• Detour: Continue on EB I-80/94 to SB S.R. 51 to Central Avenue
During winter 2009-10, construction will focus on the middle of I-80/94 with no ramp closures. During the 2010 construction season, construction will focus on the westbound lanes with only the ramp from Central Avenue to westbound I-80/94 closed.
