The Professional Truck Driver Institute has recertified the Idaho Center for Professional Truck Driving, in Nampa, Idaho, for five years.
The mid-sized truck driver training program is part of the Boise State University system.
"We put safety first. We always judge our program on how safe it is," said Ralph Dean, program head, who has been with the Idaho Center for Professional Truck Driving since 1994. "When we have wind blowing and snow drifts, we choose to work our students in the yard and keep them off the road," Dean said. Yet students will have behind-the-wheel time in inclement weather, because as professional drivers, they will face winter driving conditions unknown to drivers in other parts of the country.
A member of the Association of Publicly Funded Truck Driving Schools, the Idaho Center for Professional Truck Driving initially sought and received PTDI course certification in 2003. Dean said they plan to continue the PTDI process. "For any program in a university setting, you have to do a review of your program every five years," Dean said. "The PTDI certification process makes it easy for us to do that."
PTDI is a national, nonprofit organization established to develop uniform industry skill, curriculum, and certification standards for entry-level truck driver training and motor carrier driver finishing programs, and to certify entry-level truck driver training courses at public and private schools and driver finishing programs at carriers.
