The Illinois State Toll Highway Authority is holding public hearings this month on a proposed toll increase on trucks to pay for a major construction project on the Illinois Tollway system.

Billed as "Tomorrow's Transportation Today," the Tollway's $1.8 billion capital plan would add Green Lanes, reconstruct or construct two major area interchanges and provide funds for local interchange projects. The proposal would raise the tolls for five-axle trucks from the current $4 to $6.40 by 2015. Three- and four-axle trucks would see tolls rise from the current $2.25 to $3.60.

The Green Lanes will be created within heavily traveled segments of existing Tollway to reduce emissions and congestion by encouraging drivers to use car pools or mass transit. The Tollway will also build an interchange between the Tri-State Tollway (I-294) and I-57, as well as rebuild the outdated interchange at Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90) and I-290/IL Route 53.
