Con-way ranked No. 72 on the 2008 InformationWeek 500 for its Step Saver Web-based dock management tool.

Step Saver is used in the nightly operations of Con-way Freight, the company's less-than-truckload transportation company. Based on a Web technology platform, Step Saver helps dock coordinators automate shipment traffic into, out of and across the company's freight loading docks.

Step Saver's "Optimizer" function uses a mathematical model to plot the most efficient door assignments based on the latest shipment and volume information available. The program is used at the company's 75 major FACs nationwide. Benefits of the technology have already included a 21 percent reduction in forklift usage, as well as a 5.6 percent increase in pounds worked per man-hour, which translates to a savings projection of approximately $3 million per year upon full implementation.

InformationWeek has identified and honored the nation's most innovative users of information technology with its annual listing, and has tracked the technology, strategies, investments and administrative practices of America's best-known companies. The list is unique among corporate rankings because it spotlights the power of innovation in information technology, rather than simply identifying the biggest IT spenders.
