The National Transportation Institute is hosting a two-day course March 5 and 6 in Memphis, Tenn., called Class 8 Driver Recruiting, Selection Measurement and Retention.
The freight downturn that began in the last half of 2006
and continued during 2007 has provided the industry a chance to prepare for the impact of a qualified driver shortage, which will begin in earnest when freight begins to bounce back.
Economists are currently predicting recovery starting in the later half of 2008 and the wise manager is preparing now.
Class 8 Driver Recruiting, Selection, Measurement and Retention provides these executives and managers a solid foundation of actionable knowledge for all who attend. The course stays on target by focusing on "fundamental" issues important to succeeding in the emerging driver market.
The multi-discipline course draws its content from the motor transportation industry as well as the psychology and business management disciplines. The motor transportation industry has a "perfect storm" brewing, which will profoundly influence the operations of carriers from coast to coast. The key ingredients coming together to create the storm are a precipitous decline in the traditional demographic from which truck drivers are recruited, a rapidly approaching wave of baby-boomer retirements among the current driver population, increasing driver requirements and a dramatic increase in freight demand over the next 10 years.
This course begins before you take your seat in the classroom. Each attendee will have the opportunity to submit the details of their companies existing driver pay package before the seminar. Those participants choosing to submit this information will receive a confidential report, when arriving at the seminar. This report will compare your driver pay, driver requirements and benefits in 65 areas to the national averages, fleets of your size, fleets in you geographic region and fleets of similar trailer type.
Topics include:
• The 10 year outlook for driver supply and freight demand
• Class 8 driver wages - national, regional and by trailer type
• Class 8 driver benefits
• Current and changing driver hiring standards
• Changes occurring in activity based pay
• Driver hiring profiles
• Objective driver selection tools
