“A lot of companies tout PrePass, telling drivers it will keep them out of long DOT inspection lines,” said John Spiros, Roehl’s vice president of safety. “But unless the company has a good safety record to go with it, the green (pass) light on that transponder is never going to go on.”
Having PrePass technology in your trucks is only half the equation, Spiros explained. The system automatically signals drivers approaching weigh stations whether or not they must pull into line or can bypass the inspection based on the carrier’s safety history. The better the company’s safety record, the more often the driver is given the green light to bypass the weigh station.
With one of the best Inspection Selection System scores among truckload carriers in the nation, Roehl drivers are allowed to pass more often, Spiros said. “That means while drivers for other companies are pulled over waiting in a weigh station line, Roehl drivers may continue on their trips being both safe and productive. That’s more money in their paycheck and a whole lot less hassle in their day.”
Roehl’s ISS score of 29, which puts it well within the “pass – no inspection required” range, is based on the federal DOT SafeStat data. The SafeStat data combines the carrier’s record of crashes, roadside inspections, enforcement history (violations/citations) and on-site compliance reviews, and is updated monthly.
The American Trucking Associations recently cited Roehl’s flatbed division as the second-safest small fleet in the nation. Among large carriers, (over 100 million miles annually), according to the ATA, the company’s van division is the third safest in nation.
