Barr-Nunn Transportation instituted a practical mile pay program this month, according to officials at the Granger, Iowa-based carrier.

As of May 1, Barr-Nunn drivers and owner-operators are taking part in a program that allows them to achieve pay increases, bonuses and vacation much faster, along with larger paychecks.
The company says the new pay system more accurately reflects the drivers' actual route and benefits drivers and their families.
Barr-Nunn said it ran “sample” lanes to make sure the package would really benefit their drivers. They found that a run from Columbus, Ohio, to Atlanta, Ga., was paying 534 miles, but under the new system it pays 575 miles – a 7.7 percent increase in miles. Charlotte, N.C., to Cincinnati, Ohio, was paying 451 miles and now pays 479 miles, for a 6.2 percent increase in miles. And Memphis, Tenn., to Orlando, Fla., now pays 803 miles versus the previous 761 miles, which is a 5.5 percent increase in miles.

Barr-Nunn said this is the largest single pay raise for its fleet in recent history. The company has grown to a fleet of 675 tractors, 1,800 trailers and more than 500 customers nationwide.
