ABF Freight System Inc., Fort Smith, Ark., announced Tuesday that it will limit its standard fuel surcharge through Oct. 4, 2005 due to the extremely volatile fuel prices resulting from Hurricane Katrina.

In a press release, ABF said, “Hurricane Katrina has introduced an unprecedented volatility in diesel fuel prices, with significant price changes occurring in the matter of only a few hours. While ABF believes these wild swings in diesel prices will be short-lived, we are uncomfortable using these wildly volatile prices as the basis for our fuel surcharge calculation.
During this period, the company's fuel surcharge will not exceed the pre-Katrina level, as established on Aug. 29, 2005.
