Qualcomm has revealed more about its new mobile communications system being tested in truckload fleets this summer. The new product called OmniVision provides near-universal coverage using Ku-Band satellite
, but will be configurable at the customer’s option for multi-mode communication, including ground-based digital cellular and Wi-Fi.
According to Qualcomm, OmniVision will be capable of moving substantial amounts of data, such as signature capture graphics, at a relatively low cost. The new onboard device will provide drivers with spoken, turn-by-turn directions; necessary geographical data will be stored on the device. OmniVision will feature other driver tools, including e-mail, an alarm clock and the ability to access local and regional traffic information. OmniVision features text-to-speech capability so drivers can access messages without having to read them.
In a series of workshops with customers this summer, Qualcomm representatives said that OmniVision will provide a platform for a number of Qualcomm-branded applications, including fleet efficiency analysis tools and the electronic driver logs that the company announced earlier this year. The company stressed that dispatch software will not be among its software offerings. The Qualcomm software packages will be part of product bundles that can include both OmniVision and Qualcomm’s T2 Untethered TrailerTRACS trailer management system.
OmniVision will eventually offer remote vehicle shutdown capability, enabling fleets to remotely stop vehicles that may have been stolen or otherwise diverted in serious situations.
Qualcomm said the OmniVision onboard device features a new, tough display and will run on the Windows CE operating system, but in a totally controlled environment. It will not be possible to load unauthorized Windows applications.
According to Qualcomm, OmniVision will not supplant its venerable OmniTRACS satellite system, but can be installed in OmniTRACS fleets without complications.
The company has not said when OmniVision will be commercially available.
