The Freelance Star of Fredericksburg, Va., reported Saturday that Servicetown Travel Plaza in Stafford County will close for good after business on Wednesday, April 27.

Servicetown sits on approximately 17 acres just off the Interstate 95 interchange with Warrenton Road, as that stretch of U.S. 17 is known. It's bordered by a McDonald's and the Blue Beacon Truck Wash on one side and a Chevron gas station on the other. Days Inn is just across the highway. The truck stop has been in business for 40 years and lately has served from 500 to 600 trucks each day.
The site, which has parking for 200 trucks, is an attractive piece of real estate that finally drew an undisclosed offer that has been accepted.
"We've been very successful here," said J.P. Eck, co-owner of Servicetown. "We're not selling because independent truck stops are a dying breed. The timing was right because it was a real-estate deal."
Now that Servicetown is closing, Carmel Church in Caroline County will have I-95's northernmost truck stops in Virginia.
According to the Freelance Star, Servicetown was criticized in 1990 for what the county prosecutor called rampant drugs and prosititution. A 75- by 300-foot overnight parking area was once known as party row, but the owners hired extra security to deal with the problems. Stafford Sheriff's Maj. David Decatur said there have been few problems at Servicetown since then.
