To ease traffic congestion, the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada and the Nevada Department of Transportation are installing ramp meters
at seven U. S. 95 entrance ramps in the Las Vegas area. Three will be activated on March 29.
The meters have a signal which contains two lights – one red, one green – to regulate the flow of traffic in a timed, spaced manner. The goal is to reduce accidents and back-ups caused by merging. The ramp meters will operate only during peak times, such as during the morning and evening commutes. Failure to stop at an operating ramp meter is a traffic violation similar to running a red light and can result in a fine.
The following cities have seen a significant reduction in their accident rate thanks to ramp meters: Minneapolis, 24%; Seattle, 39%; Portland, 43%; and both Denver and Detroit, 50%.
