Gary Richards writes a column called Roadshow for the San Jose Mercury News. Yesterday’s column offered highway incidents submitted by readers
noting drivers they claim to have seen on California’s highways.
Among the stupid driver stunts mentioned were:
* A musician with long hair and beard intensely playing a large saxophone while steering with his knees.
* A guy playing the guitar while driving.
* A driver playing a violin with both hands; left knee steering.
* A guy drumming on his steering wheel with drumsticks.
* A driver playing the flute, steering with his elbows.
* A driver of an old VW beetle playing a trumpet who had to turn his head to have room to hold the trumpet to his lips.
* A school bus driver eating oatmeal, spoon in one hand, bowl in other.
* A teacher grading papers on her steering wheel.
* A woman knitting.
Some of Richards’ earlier columns found on the papers web site mentioned these sightings:
* A guy driving while hanging out of his sunroof, bent over washing his window.
* A woman who put on cruise control, opened the sunroof, climbed up and steered with her feet.
* A woman applying deodorant while driving at 70 mph.
We wish Richards well and hope he continues his unique coverage of the transportation scene.
