Federal regulators this week asked for more information about the proposed $35 billion merger between Sprint Corp. and Nextel Communications Inc.
The companies began the review process when they filed documents last month with the Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission. Officials had 30 days to complete the review, but this week’s request for additional information extends the review period for another 30 days.
A Sprint-Nextel merger would result in the nation's third-largest wireless company, with about 40 million customers.
The impact of the additional review period is unknown, however Reed Hundt, a former chairman of the Federal Communications Commission was quoted in the Kansas City Star as saying that the request for additional information does not necessarily signal a lengthy delay. Hundt said the deal was likely to be approved.
