USA Today reported this week that Ford would end standard phone service for 8,000 employees who will use cellphones instead.

According to USA Today, Ford plans to start removing desktop phones by the end of March for 8,000 engineers who are often away from their desks, yet frequently need to be reached. Cellphones have already been distributed among the affected group. Service provided by Sprint includes walkie-talkie style service. Ford facilities will be outfitted with antennas to prevent dead spots.
According to the newspaper story, a few mostly small or midsize businesses have gone wireless, but more could be coming.
Of course, truckers have been cell phone users for years.
