The Chicago Tribune reported Thursday that Mike S. Zafirovski will resign as president of Motorola with the goal of heading another major corporation.
The venerable technology company is headquartered in Schaumburg, a Chicago suburb.
According to the Tribune, Zafirovski's move came after “a year of speculation on when -- not if -- he would leave Motorola after having been passed over for CEO.”
Zafirovski, a native of Macedonia, joined Motorola as president of its cell-phone unit in June 2000.
"I came at the height of the boom, in time for the bubble to burst," Zafirovski told the Tribune. "It wasn't by design. No one could have predicted it."
Zafirovski led a turnaround of Motorola's cell-phone group, the company's largest unit, that involved extensive downsizing.
