The Bakersfield Californian reported Wednesday that Flying J, the truckstop chain, is buying the Shell Bakersfield Refinery for a reported $130 million.
The paper also said Flying J wants to build four to six more travel plazas and expand its trucking operations in California. The company currently has six truck stops in the state, two of which are near Bakersfield.
Jeff Utley, vice president of refining operations at Flying J Inc. told the paper it's possible the company will resume oil production operations in California, which it sold off about five years ago. He said the company could find new production opportunities in Kern County.
Utley and three colleagues were in town to meet with employees of the refinery. Their first meeting was Tuesday morning, when they briefed employees on the company and its growth strategy in California.
