KYW-TV in Philadelphia, Pa., reported that a truck carrying scrap metal lost its load on I-95 in Wilmington, Del. early Monday morning
, spilling metal fragments on the roadway.
Dozens of drivers drove into scattered debris they couldn’t see in the predawn darkness.
"When the material escaped out of the back, it scattered all over the roadway so vehicles traveling in all lanes hit the debris at different times,” said Corporal Jeff Whitemarsh of the Delaware State Police.
According to KYW-TV, 26 vehicles suffered at least one flat tire.
It took about three hours to clear the roadway. The truck driver is facing charges.
