A strike by the union that includes Canada Customs workers led to long backups earlier this week at bridges in western New York for trucks heading to Ontario.
Peace Bridge spokesman Lucian Greco said U.S. staff was doing everything they could to manage the long lines of waiting trucks. Operations on the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge also were hampered.
Brent Gallagher, spokesman for the Niagara Falls Bridge Authority, said that for part of the day, the line of waiting trucks snaked more than a mile from the bridge. Passenger vehicles did not face the same major delays on the Buffalo-area bridges to Canada on the first day of the strike by the Public Service Alliance of Canada, which began at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday.
According the Toronto Star, the strike continued into Wednesday. The U.S. Customs web site reported minimal delays at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
