SCS Transportation Inc. posted sharply higher earnings and revenue for the 2004 third quarter.

For the three months that ended Sept. 30, SCS earned $6.55 million, or 43 cents a share, on $256.82 million in revenue. Earnings per share were up 26% from the same period last year, when the company posted profits of $5.13 million, or 34 cents a share, on $211.53 million in sales.
SCS Transportation is a Kansas City-based trucking company operating two regional carriers -- Saia and Jevic.
Bert Trucksess, the company's chairman and chief executive, said lower-than-expected volume growth in July and August, higher drivers' wages, service investments and the hurricanes in the Southeast created difficult obstacles for the company.
However, Saia and Jevic posted higher revenues for the quarter.
