Symbol Technologies, Inc. and Nextel Communications, Inc. have agreed to develop mobile computing solutions
, including embedding Nextel's iDEN (integrated Digital Enhanced Network) technology into rugged Symbol handheld devices.
Nextel-compatible Symbol devices, such as those used by fleets for remote scanning and signature capture, will be able to communicate over the Nextel network like any Nextel phone. In many cases, that will connect a driver’s handheld device directly to the company without an onboard cradle or short-range wireless between the device and a truck’s mobile communications system.
Symbol will be able to incorporate Nextel's 4-in-1 wireless offerings, including digital cellular voice, Nationwide Direct Connect service, Nextel Online wireless data and two-way messaging.
