FFE Transportation Services Inc. has announced that veteran driver Steve Hester was given a new Freightliner Century show truck at the conclusion of the refrigerated carrier’s Truck Give-A-Way program.

Last January, the company began advertising that it would give away a Freightliner Century show truck. Requirements to be eligible for the truck included a specific average of miles driven per week, on time delivery, good customer service, and observing minimal safety requirements.
After carefully reviewing all drivers who met the qualifications over the past eight months, Hester’s name was drawn as the winner of FFE’s first Great Truck Give-A-Way.
Hester, a Californian who has been a company driver for various companies since 1978, said he wanted to become an owner-operator. He joined FFE in January because he said they offered a lease purchase program with payments as low as $359 per week. Further, the company said that once a lease expires, FFE provides the opportunity for contractors to buy the tractor.
"When I signed on with FFE and first heard of the contest, I didn’t think anything about it," said Hester. "Before this, I’ve never won anything in my life. I certainly couldn’t imagine winning anything as nice as a brand new tractor. The day I went to hear the announcement of the winner, my mother told me I was going to win. And boy was she right."
Hester has been driving a dedicated run from California to the Northeast, and his run allows him to get home every two weeks for two to three days at a time.
Brian Etchision, director of FFE’s Owner-Operator Division, said, "The current average for our owner-operators is $1.02 cents per mile, but over the last four weeks, Hester has been averaging $1.18 cents per mile. He has proved that if you follow all the directions that the recipe calls for, you will be successful. We would love to have 1,000 more drivers just like him."
