The IEEE has announced the first universal standard for motor vehicle event data recorders
, much like those that monitor crashes on aircraft and trains.
Many in trucking refer to the recorders as black boxes.
The IEEE is an international organization that establishes standards in electronics so that devices can communicate with one another. IEEE is popular shorthand for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.
Sandards would be required before any government agency could practically mandate data recorders – or black boxes – on trucks, something reportedly under consideration at the FMCSA.
The new standard, IEEE 1616 "Motor Vehicle Event Data Recorders," specifies minimal performance characteristics for onboard tamper- and crash-proof memory devices for all types and classes of highway and roadway vehicles. This international protocol will help manufacturers develop black boxes for autos, buses and ambulances as well as for trucks. It includes a data dictionary of 86 data elements and covers device survivability.
