Tango Enterprises, Inc., Reston, Va., a creator of custom software solutions, announced a contract with General Services, Inc., a freight handling, or “lumper” service.
Tango will develop a wireless system to capture data, instantly print receipts and invoices at remote locations, and synchronize data with a central server. Tango will also provide General Services with a centralized database accessible over the Internet. The system will ensure timely delivery of accurate information to the central General Services accounting system.
General Services, based in Winchester, Va., provides freight loading and unloading services for a variety of commercial clients including various Giant Food, Inc. locations. According to the press release, General Services’ president, George Barlow, identified this market while operating his own fleet of freight trucks.
“As the truck drivers were usually unable to assist with the loading and unloading of freight due to liability issues and union regulations,” the release said, Barlow staffed regular loading docks with his hired staff. Other carriers have since contracted with General Services and the company now has over 500 employees at 30 locations to load and unload trucks.
The new Tango system will enable recording of invoice and receipt data using a handheld computer on the loading dock. Recorded elements will include items and quantity delivered, time of delivery, cost of loading or unloading and names of individuals who handled the freight. Invoices and receipts for the loading and unloading services will be printed on site at delivery. The system will eliminate General Services’ current system that requires the freight handlers to mail or carry records back to the central office where the data is entered manually into the accounting system.
“Wireless technologies have been used for years to track packages for delivery. This system extends to tracking labor for loading and unloading freight,” said Scott Butler, President, Tango Enterprises.
