The trucking industry hauled more than 9 billion tons of freight in 2003, or 68.9% of all freight tonnage transported in the U.S., according to data collected by the American Trucking Assns. (ATA).

The industry generated revenues totaling $610 billion. Further, according to estimates to be released later in ATA’s annual Freight Forecast, trucking revenues will likely surpass the $1 trillion mark by 2015 and account for 87.3% of all freight transportation revenue.
In the ATA 2003 freight report, rail moved 12.9% of U.S. freight, another 7.7% was waterborne, and 9.4% went by pipeline. Air freight (0.1%) and rail intermodal (0.9%) freight combined equaled just 1% of U.S. freight in 2003.
