Televigation, Sunnyvale, Calif., has conducted an informal survey that indicates the price of current GPS fleet management technology is out of reach for small-to-medium-sized fleets.

In its announcement, Televigation said that customer feedback and research included more than 60 trucking managers that operate fleets of up to 500 vehicles. Two-thirds, or 68%, identified high cost as the primary reason they have not implemented GPS fleet management. Thirteen percent said the training required and complex installation of current GPS platforms was not worth the investment.
Feedback suggests that until an affordable, easy-to-use solution becomes available, small-to-medium-sized fleets could fall behind in productivity and efficiency. The following top five benefits of GPS technology were identified by industry managers:
1. Keeps track of driver locations for efficient job allocations
2. Offers real-time updates of a driver's work status
3. Enables a higher level of customer service
4. Reports routes, stop location and other data automatically, reducing the need for manual data input
5. Assists drivers with driving directions
Televigation offers a number of products that provide location information and communications using relatively inexpensive mobile phones operating on the Nextel network.
