Aether Systems Inc., Owings Mills, Md., announced that Western Distributing Transportation Corp. will convert its entire fleet to MobileMax, Aether's multi-mode wireless communications and tracking solution.

Denver-based Western Distributing, a refrigerated carrier with a fleet of 170 units, counts Coors Brewing Co. among its customers.
Western Distributing plans to use Aether features, including ADV Monitor, an application that provides real-time information on vehicle and driver performance, state-line crossings and vehicle fault codes. Western will also implement Proximity Alert to automatically notify the company of critical arrival and departure information.
"We made this decision following a competitive review, and Aether's multi-mode coverage factored significantly in our choice," said Dino Guadagni, vice president at Western Distributing. "We had previously tested a satellite system, and found that our fleet was often unreachable when tall buildings blocked the sky view. MobileMax addresses this issue for us, and also ensures we have coverage in the tough spots of Nevada and Utah. The multi-mode solution fills the void."
Aether MobileMax is a multi-mode system that automatically switches between land-based and satellite communications without driver or dispatcher intervention.
