CFI, an international truckload carrier based in Joplin, Mo., has announced an increase of more than six cents per mile in top driver pay. The pay increase will be implemented over a four-month time frame that began Monday.

-- A solo driver will be able to earn up to 45 cents per mile.
-- A team will be able to earn up to 53 cents per mile.
-- Owner-operators will be able to earn up to 98 cents per mile. (Includes current fuel stabilization program.)

Elements of the increase include a three-cent per mile across the board increase for all CFI drivers with one-year experience and owner-operators. Up to four cents per mile can be earned through the new safety bonus program. The new pay plan also incorporates increases in additional driver pay items including stop-offs, hourly, loading and unloading and a special Canadian border crossing payment.
"This unprecedented pay increase is one way CFI intends to ensure that our drivers are financially protected from the impact of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) new hours of service regulations that become effective Jan. 4, 2004. This is the most aggressive driver pay increase in CFI’s 52-year history and we believe it will ensure that CFI will continue to retain and attract the safest and most professional drivers in the trucking industry," said Glenn F. Brown, chairman and CEO.
CFI continues to work with its customer base to minimize inefficiencies and reduce the down time its drivers may incur.
"CFI has conducted safety meetings and one-on-one training with drivers and operations personnel to insure that CFI is prepared to comply with the new hours of service regulations," said Brown. "This preparation will allow us to continue the tradition of picking up and delivering all freight as promised."
CFI, founded in 1951, operates 2,500 tractors and more than 6,500 trailers, and transports a variety of goods throughout the contiguous United States and Canada. CFI interlines with Mexican carriers at various border crossings to provide through-trailer service to Mexico. In addition to its Joplin headquarters, CFI operates five terminals. CFI and its subsidiaries have 37 sales offices throughout North America and employ more than 2,700 people. The driver fleet is comprised of both company drivers and independent contractors.
