FedEx Ground, an operating unit of Federal Express Corp., Memphis, Tenn., has started construction on a new distribution hub in Hagerstown, Md.

The new hub is part of a $1.8 billion network expansion plan calling for 10 facilities to be built over the next six years. The project also calls for the expansion of 23 existing hubs and the expansion or relocation of more than 300 pickup and delivery terminals.
The nationwide expansion is expected to double the company's average daily volume capacity to 4.8 million packages due to increased customer demand.
