Asset tracking provider Crosslink Inc., has introduced a remote tire-monitoring system for trucks.

Crosslink’s TireBoss system, developed in cooperation with Bridgestone Tire, uses Crosslink's sensors, Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) tags and readers to monitor tire temperature and pressure on trucks and other heavy vehicles.
A TireBoss tag is mounted inside each tire. The RFID transponder sends data on the temperature-adjusted pressure of each vehicle's tire to readers placed on the truck or at a terminal entrance. Technicians can scan tags with a handheld reader.
The system uses one-inch square 915 MHz passive tags with a range of up to 30 feet. Each tag holds eight kilobits of data, including a unique serial number, temperature and pressure readings, and the maximum temperature of a tire during its lifetime.
Crosslink says tags can be read within 100 milliseconds so readings can be taken as a truck passes static readers. As of now tags stay inside tires for the life, but Crosslink says it's working on reusable tags.
TireBoss will be available early next year at approximately $30 each. Fixed readers will run about $1,000. On-board and handheld readers will cost about $300 to $400.
