FedEx Ground, an operating company of FedEx Corp. has opened a new, fully automated terminal in Wheeling, Ill.

The distribution facility features the latest package-sorting technology and is the second automated terminal to open as part of FedEx Ground's $1.8-billion network expansion plan.
The investment calls for the addition of 10 new hubs and the expansion of 23 existing hubs, as well as the relocation or expansion of more than 300 pickup and delivery terminals. In response to increasing customer demand, the nationwide expansion will nearly double the company's average daily volume capacity from 2.5 million to 4.8 million packages.
The new 107,000-square-foot Wheeling terminal is triple the size of the center in Northbrook that it is replacing. In addition, the facility is equipped with sophisticated package processing equipment, including high-speed, camera-based scanners that read all sides of a package to capture digital images of each bar code.
The Wheeling facility, which serves Lake and northern Cook counties, has a workforce of more than 200 employees and independent contractors.
FedEx Ground also operates facilities in nearby Bedford Park, Carol Stream, Chicago, Franklin Park, and Schaumburg, Ill.
