The enhanced Cummins ISL engine is now available for order on Kenworth trucks and is expected to be popular with KW’s short hood T800 and W900S models.

Kenworth Truck Co. is offering the 8.9-liter, high-performance engine in ratings of 310 to 350 horsepower and 1,050 to 1,250 foot-pounds of torque.
"With a 500-pound weight savings over competitive engines, it's also a great engine for companies that gross out in weight," said Steve Gilligan, Kenworth's general marketing manager.
Tom Kieffer, Cummins executive director for marketing, said the engine has accumulated more than three million miles of field testing.
He said the new Cummins ISL is up to 37% quieter than the previous ISL engine, due to pilot fuel injection and a revised gear cover.
The Cummins ISL engine also offers the option of the C-Brake, designed specifically for the ISL by engine brake manufacturer Jacobs. The product significantly increases stopping power with up to 330 braking horsepower, while reducing wear on service brakes, according to Cummins.
Kenworth owners driving mixers and dump trucks also will be able to benefit from the availability of the ISL's rear engine power takeoff. "This is a great feature for vocational customers or anyone who needs their engine to do double duty," Gilligan said.
Performance and reliability have been enhanced through the use of a new High Pressure Common Rail fuel system with electronically controlled injectors.
High injection fuel pressures are maintained regardless of engine speed for optimum performance across the entire rpm range.
The ISL engine offers the patented and proven Cummins Variable Geometry Turbocharger. Because it has only one moving part in the hot exhaust stream, the VG Turbo provides reliability and durability. The VG Turbo constantly adjusts airflow based on engine load, altitude and temperature to deliver improved performance and transient response.
Designed with 24-valve centered fuel injection, the ISL offers optimum combustion. The result is improved performance, increased efficiency and less noise, with reduced emissions.
Headquartered in Columbus, Ind., Cummins serves its customers through more than 500 company-owned and independent distributor locations in 131 countries and territories.
