Washington State’s Broadway Group is celebrating 40 years in the truckstop industry this week.
Originating at the Spokane 3rd Avenue Truck Stop -- now Broadway Flying J -- the company has grown to incorporate Travel Plazas in Washington, Montana, Nevada and Iowa.
Broadway Group was founded by Don and Bernice Alsaker in the early 1960s after Don Alsaker worked his way from fuel island attendant to junior partner with Broadway Truck Stops’ co-owner, Chuck Williams. By the 1970s, the Alsakers had become sole owners of the truckstop, strengthening their business practices and initiating growth into other locations. In the late 1980s, Broadway Truck Stops partnered with Flying J Travel Plazas.
Led by Don Alsaker’s entrepreneurial spirit, Broadway Truck Stops has always prided itself on doing business the "Broadway Way."
Growing from its original 17 employees, Broadway Flying J now has nearly 500 on the payroll, operating nine truckstops, one auto stop, seven restaurants and five casinos.
Don’s son, Dan Alsaker, now heads the operation.
