Caterpillar Inc. has committed to financially support a major voluntary initiative by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to substantially reduce emissions from school buses across the United States.
The company pledged up to $250,000 in retrofit technology support of the EPA Clean School Bus USA initiative, which will upgrade existing school bus engines with new, emission reduction technology. Retrofit technology can reduce diesel particulate emissions on school buses by more than 90%.
"We are pleased to offer substantial financial support to this important EPA initiative," said Sherril West, Caterpillar vice president and chief technology officer. "Caterpillar has invested heavily in technology that not only provides clean diesel engines for the future, but substantially reduces emissions from existing engines."
The EPA program will help school districts and school bus fleet operators either replace older buses with newer models or install low emission control devices on existing buses.
Caterpillar will identify one or more school districts with bus fleets that would benefit from the company's emission reduction technology, and will work with those districts to implement the company's emission reduction technology.
Caterpillar has formed the Emissions Retrofit Solutions Group to provide emissions reduction options for buses, trucks and off-road machines.
