USFreightways Corp. is asking its shareholders to change its name to USF Corp.

According to Samuel K. Skinner, chairman, president and chief executive officer, "Since we became USFreightways in 1996, the transportation industry has been transformed into much more than moving freight from one location to another. Tracking, tracing, online services and other advances in technology have enabled our company to work closer with our customers than ever before to provide total solutions to their supply chain management requirements.
"In additional to our core LTL operations, USF continues to be a growing player in the logistics services and truckload segments. We have also created a new USF Technology Services company to house our ever-increasing technological expertise. By removing the 'freightways' from our name, we are acknowledging that we have evolved into a company that is moving forward into the future."
Doug Waggoner, senior vice president of Strategic Marketing, added, "USF is the brand that ties our independently operated companies together. There are no USFreightways trucks, but there are plenty of assets bearing the USF mark in tandem with one of our strong, local brands. This name change is consistent with our long-term branding strategy and will better support our mission of competing together collectively as a USF family of companies."
USF Corp.'s operating subsidiaries will retain their current names and the familiar orange, white and blue livery. The name change is subject to shareholder approval at the company's annual meeting scheduled for May 2, 2003.
USFreightways operates through a network of independently operated companies that compete collectively. USF's five regional trucking companies -- USF Bestway, USF Dugan, USF Holland, USF Red Star, and USF Reddaway -- provide next-day, regional and national less-than-truckload services. USF Glen Moore is a provider of regional and national truckload services. USF Logistics Services is a full-service provider of transportation management, contract warehousing, dedicated fleet, cross docking, domestic ocean services and reverse logistics. USF Technology Services is a provider of information integration and support services to USF and its customers, including USF Net web-based services.
