The Tennessee Department of Transportation is making speed limit changes on interstates in the Memphis area.

All of the changes involve increasing the speed limits in certain areas of I-40, I-55 and I-240.
The changes are part of an overall assessment of speeds in urban areas that have not been reviewed since the 1970’s when Congress lowered speed limits nationwide from 75 mph to 55 mph.
New signage will be placed to indicate changes at the following locations:
-- I-40 will be increased to 70 mph from the Fayette County line to US-64 where it will be 65 mph to the ramps at SR-300. It will then remain 55 mph to the Arkansas state line.
-- I-55 will be 65 mph from the Mississippi state line to US-51 where it will remain 55 mph to the Arkansas state line.
-- I-240 will be 65 mph from the I-40 interchange to US-51 where it will remain 55 mph. This change, however, will not occur until current construction is completed.
