Nextel Communications Inc., Reston, Va., may soon face serious competition for its Direct Connect service, popular among local and regional fleets.

Direct Connect enables subscribers to communicate with the push of a single button on the cell phone, much like two-way radio.
At a recent industry conference, Verizon Wireless Inc. Chief Executive Officer Dennis Strigl announced his company will offer what it calls "push to talk" service in the next few months. Sprint PCS President Len Lauer had previously announced his company is also working on a “push to talk” service. Sprint is the fourth largest wireless provider in the U.S., and Verizon is the largest.
Meanwhile, on its web site, Nextel claims that its Direct Connect service, which is currently limited to regional use, will ramp up to nationwide accessibility in two stages this year.
