Iteris Inc.of Anaheim, Calif., a subsidiary of Odetics Inc., announced that Praxair Inc. of Danbury, Conn., has ordered 200 new trucks with the Iteris Lane Guidance lane departure warning system
installed. Praxair is an industrial gas provider with a private fleet of some 600 trucks.
AutoVue is a small, integrated unit consisting of a camera, onboard computer and software that easily attaches to the windshield, dashboard or overhead. AutoVue is programmed to recognize the difference between the road and lane markings. The unit's camera tracks the lane markings (both solid and dashed) and continually feeds the information directly into the unit's computer, which combines this data with the vehicle's speed. The computer can predict when a vehicle begins to drift towards an unintended lane change, alerting the driver with a distinctive rumble strip sound.
"All new trucks purchased by Praxair will be spec'ed with the Iteris Lane Guidance lane departure warning system," said John Mitchell, Praxair national manager of distribution.
Praxair has been testing a variety of safety-related devices and recently ordered installation of the Eagle Eye system on 50 new International cylinder delivery trucks. The Eagle Eye Obstacle Detection System alerts a driver to any object within 10 feet of his vehicle to help avoid a collision.
