Tele Atlas North America Inc., Menlo Park, Calif., has introduced a new map database that combines turn-by-turn direction capability with real-time traffic information.

Real-time traffic data will eventually enable dynamic routing and rerouting of trucks.
According to the company, the new database covers nearly 7.3 million miles of U.S. and Canadian roads, resulting in a seamless North American database with contiguous routing from door-to-door and coast-to-coast, within the U.S., and between the U.S. and Canada.
Tele Atlas claims its new database is the first linked to a real-time traffic feed provided through the company's strategic alliance with Westwood One, one of the largest traffic reporting operations in the world. Tele Atlas and Westwood One deliver real-time traffic information for 92 markets and 98% of the population in the most congested metro areas.
Nearly 350,000 traffic reporting locations link directly to the Tele Atlas map database to enable real-time traffic. Tele Atlas claims that makes it practical for navigation and telematics suppliers to build systems with dynamic re-routing. Fleets will eventually be able to access the database through those suppliers.
