Hundreds of workers began a strike against Lufkin Industries Inc. Monday after failing to negotiate a health-care agreement with the Lufkin, Texas oilfield equipment maker.

Union and company officials put the number of strikers at between 500 and 700. Company officials said they kept manufacturing plants operating with supervisors and employees who reported to work.
Lufkin Industries employs about 1,200 people in Angelina County making truck trailers, power transmission equipment, foundry castings and oilfield pumping units. A separate unit that provides oilfield services is not affected by the strike, according to news reports.
